American citizenship

Naturalization (Citizenship N-400)

Lawful permanent residents are typically eligible to naturalize and become U.S. citizens within five years of obtaining green cards. In the case of marriage with an American citizen, the time is reduced to 3 years.

Citizenship through naturalization is the process by which a foreign person applies for American citizenship.

It may be possible that you are already an American citizen (in the case of being born abroad and being the child of an American citizen or that one of your parents is an American citizen before turning 18), in this case you must fill out form N- 600 to obtain your citizenship certificate. Conditions apply.

The first step to obtain American Citizenship is to complete the application through form N-400. You must take an interview and civic exam in English unless you qualify for a medical exemption.

You can also take the civic exam in your native language if: You are 50 years old and have been a legal resident for 20 years, or if you are 55 years old and have been a legal resident for 15 years.

Necessary Documents:

  • Copy of your residence.

  • Copy of Marriage or Divorce Certificate(s).

  • List with dates and places you have traveled to outside the United States since you initially arrived in the country.

  • 2 Passport size photos.

  • List of all the addresses you have lived at in the last 5 years.

  • List of jobs where you have worked in the last 5 years.

  • Biographical information. See general biographical information questionnaire.

This procedure can be done due to low resources or payment forgiveness.

For low-income processing or payment forgiveness:

If due to low resources, add: letter of illegibility from Children and family (access FL), documents issued by immigration (Notice to appear/Order of Suspicion), copy of most recent taxes (if applicable) and the income tax returns. last 4 weeks.
